Ian Howells is a highly accomplished counsellor with ten years of experience in the field. Ian holds membership with the AASW and has worked in a range of settings with children, adolescents, adults, and couples where he has applied his professional skills and life experience for clients to gain a sense of purpose and quality of life.
Ian’s style is to be highly collaborative and purposeful. The counselling process is about working together, discovering the client’s strengths, and coaching the client to use these strengths to lessen those elements that are getting in their way. This allows clients to move from just ‘surviving’ to ‘thriving’. Together with his clients, he identifies and works toward client goals that focus on the positive ways of relating and how to choose appropriate responses to others (and our own selves) that are beneficial.
Ian supports his clients in acquiring knowledge though psychoeducation. In effect, this allows him to develop his clients’ skills that motivates them to initiate and maintain change over the long term. With more awareness and understanding, he supports clients to do more that works, and to avoid reactions that sometimes do more harm than good. Ian works alongside his clients to help them get past stuckness, pain, anguish and the problems people are used to living with. His supports them to create true change as well as a sense that the difficulties they have faced are truly behind them.
