Do I Need Therapy?

Wondering whether you need therapy is a question a lot of people sit with quietly for a long time before ever acting on it. Sometimes it follows a hard stretch. Sometimes nothing dramatic has happened at all, you just don't feel quite like yourself, and can't work out why. Both are valid reasons to be here.

Why this question is hard to sit with

There's a common belief that therapy is only for people in crisis, which makes it easy to talk yourself out of it if things feel "manageable." But therapy isn't a last resort. It's a tool for growth, self-understanding, and building skills to handle whatever life throws at you, whether that's a rough patch or simply wanting to understand yourself better.

Signs it might be worth talking to someone

Stress has become the norm, not the exception

Feeling overwhelmed isn't an occasional thing anymore, it's more days than not.

You're relying on coping habits that don't actually help

Overworking, avoidance, or numbing out have become how you get through the day.

You feel stuck in a pattern you can't shift alone

Same reaction, same result, no matter how much you try to do it differently.

A life change has knocked your footing

A new job, a loss, a move, a relationship shift, big changes can unsettle even when they're positive ones.

You've thought about it more than once

If the idea of talking to someone keeps crossing your mind, that's usually worth listening to.

Not Sure What Your Results Mean?

Wherever you landed, this quiz can't tell you what's right for you, only you can work that out. But it can be a useful prompt to check in with yourself, whether that's now or down the track.

How Counselling Can Help

A counsellor gives you a space to think out loud, unpack what's going on, and build practical tools for whatever you're navigating, big or small. Some people come in with a specific problem to work through. Others just want support building self-awareness or handling day-to-day stress better. There's no threshold you need to meet to make it worthwhile. Life Supports can match you with a counsellor who's a genuine fit for what you're going through, not just the nearest available option.

FAQs

No. Plenty of people start therapy without any diagnosis at all, simply because they want support, a different perspective, or tools to handle what's going on in their life. Therapy is a tool for growth, not something reserved for a specific condition or crisis point.

There's no threshold you need to meet. If something is taking up space in your mind or affecting how you're showing up in your day-to-day life, that's reason enough to talk to someone, even if it feels minor compared to what other people might be going through.

That's completely normal, and it's actually a common way sessions start. Your counsellor will help guide the conversation and ask questions to understand what's going on for you. You don't need a clear agenda or a neat explanation before you walk in.
