David Groves is an experienced clinical psychologist. He is a member of the Australian Clinical Psychology Association and is a board-approved supervisor of psychologists-in-training. David works with adults and adolescents and also works with couples.
David is warm, personable, and generally authentic and down-to-earth and is deeply focused on close listening and attentive responding. While the focus of therapy is different for each person, David’s goal is to provide the conditions in which a person can reflect openly and honestly on their experiences, deepen their self-understanding, and translate that understanding into actions that improve their life. David’s clients typically feel validated and understood, as well as motivated and challenged to work towards their goals.
David integrates therapy approaches depending on the person’s needs, drawing on the firm foundations of cognitive-behavioural and psychodynamic therapies. He has undertaken training in Mentalisation-Based Therapy, an evidence-based treatment for borderline personality disorder. He also has training in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, which focuses on rebuilding the couple’s bond by identifying often-unexpressed emotions that maintain negative cycles in communication. David has a strong belief in the power of the frame of therapy – the safety and structure – to open a space for new understanding, better relationships, and a freer approach to life.
